Electro Harmonix

There are effects pedals and then there are Effects Pedals, and Electro Harmonix are most certainly one of the Music Industry's pioneers, having been founded by the legendary Mike Matthews in 1968. Based in New York, Mike started work on producing a fuzz pedal for the Guild Guitar Company, which was sold under the name of ‘Foxey Lady’; a reference to superstar guitar hero, Jimi Hendrix.

Mike soon produced his first Fuzz pedal, naming it the ‘Big Muff pi’. With its full, rich, smooth bass sound, the Big Muff pi went on to become one of the most requested and most used Fuzz pedals ever produced, finding homes with big-name guitarists such as Carlos Santana, Dave Gilmour, Alex Lifeson, The Edge and many more.

Progressing on from the success of the Big Muff pedal, Mike went on to produce the Electric Mistress flange and the Small Stone phase pedals in 1976. When these pedals were released, their trademark sound was light years ahead of their competitors, helping to firmly establish Electro Harmonix as one of the world’s leading manufacturers of effects pedals for the music industry. The Electric Mistress soon became ‘the’ must have pedal and was extensively used by players such as Andy Summers, Dave Gilmour, Todd Rundgren and John Frusciante.

Electro Harmonix ceased pedal production in the mid 1980's, but resurfaced in the 1990's as a seller of vacuum tubes (valves) for guitar amplifiers. However, with the interest and demand for vintage pedals on the rise, Mike Matthews took the decision to restart production of some of his famous effects pedals in 2002 and by 2012, Electro Harmonix are once again firmly established as one of the world's leading manufacturers of effects pedals.

Known for their unique sounds, tones and effects, Electro Harmonix pedals still feature strongly in today's music.
