These three sound engines are immediately accessible from the front panel, making sound selection fool-proof even under minimal lighting. Sound shaping on-the-fly is made possible by way of a plethora of knobs, sliders, movement-sensor and buttons, and the centre LCD screen gives clear feedback of parameters and sound selection. Seven simultaneous effects bring each sound to life, while the onboard looper and drum section allow for quick beat creation and groove building. WAV, MP3 and SMF song playback is also catered for via optional USB memory.

Further editing is possible through the free Roland VR09 iPad Editor, either away from the stage or as part of the performance setup. Communication between the V-Combo VR-09 and iPad is simple to set up with Roland Wireless Connect. You can also link up with a USB cable via Apple's iPad Camera Connection Kit.

With so many features, it's easy to forget about the sounds themselves, but Roland have blessed the VR-09 with some of the best sounds from their sonic armoury. The sound-set includes professional quality acoustic and electric pianos, including a grand piano with 88-note stereo multi-sampling; SuperNATURAL-powered classic Virtual Tone Wheel organs (including transistor-type '60s organs) and a wide range of synth tones from vintage classics to modern essentials.
