NAMM 2016: Modal Introduce Eurorack Modules
Posted on Sat 23 January 2016 in entries
Five new Eurorack modules from the UK's premier synth manufacturer.
Modal Electronics have entered the growing Eurorack market with five modules, four of which are based on their 002 and 008 synths and there's a brand new utility module aimed at tighter MIDI integration. No pricing yet, but here's the details we have so far. The modules are scheduled for a release in the Spring 2016.
GCync MIDI to Clock Bi-directional Bridge
Utility module that bridges MIDI and Analogue clock including a multiplier/divider for the clock output.

Features
- MIDI to Clock Bi-directional Bridge
- 3x Analogue clock inputs, Clock, Start and Reset
- 1x MIDI input for clock
- 1x MIDI input for an external sequencer/DAW
- Switch to select clock source
- 3x Analogue clock outputs, Clock, Start and Reset
- 1x MIDI output for clock
- 1x MIDI output for an external sequencer/DAW
- Choose to remove MIDI note messages or other non-clock MIDI messages from the final MIDI output
- Operator to divide/multiply clock pulses up to 16x
- 10HP
002 Voltage Controlled Filter
Modal Electronics designed 24dB per octave four pole transistor ladder filter, with some very unusual morphing characteristics or ‘polesweeping’, enabling transition from four pole through bandpass to one pole 6db per octave, or anywhere in between.

Features
- Transistor ladder filter
- 2x Audio Inputs with trimmers
- 3x Control Voltage Ins with attenuverters – FM, Resonance and Slope
- 1x Audio Out
- Slope control morphs the filter from four pole 24dB per octave, through band pass to one pole 6dB per octave
- Transistor saturation Drive control
- 14HP
008 Voltage Controlled Filter
Innovative and extremely flexible 15 multi-mode filter, consisting of traditional modes such as low-pass, band-pass and high-pass as well as more unusual notch, phase and combination modes.

Features
- 15 multi-mode filter
- 2x Audio Inputs with trimmers
- 3x Control Voltage Ins with attenuverters – FM, Resonance and Mode
- 1x Audio Out
- 15x filter modes – 1LP, 2LP, 3LP, 4LP, 2N+LP, 2N, 2HP+LP, 3HP+LP, 2BP, 4BP, 3HP, 2HP, 1HP, 3PS and 3PS+LP (LP is low pass, N is notch, BP is band pass, HP is high pass and PS is phase shift)
- Constant switch to activate a volume compensation algorithm to counteract drops in volume when increasing Resonance, especially useful with some filter modes
- Drive switch to enable overdrive on the filter
- 14HP
002 Numerically Controlled Oscillator
Modal Electronics designed NCO for a very high resolution, and very stable oscillator plus sub oscillator. Over 50 different waveforms, ranging from classic analogue sounds to more unique digital shapes.

Features
- Numerically controlled oscillator plus sub oscillator
- 1x 1 volt per octave Input
- 1x Sync input
- 2x Control Voltage Ins with attenuverters – FM and Wave
- 2x Audio Outs
- 1x OLED display showing current waveform
- Over 50 different waveforms, ranging from classic analogue sounds to more unique digital shapes
- Coarse and fine pitch controls with option for linear or exponential detune
- Low switches the module to act as a Low Frequency Oscillator
- DeRez enables a down sampling algorithm that adds a good amount of additional high-frequency harmonics
- SubWav switches the sub oscillator from standard square wave to the same waveform as the main oscillator
- 14HP
008 Voltage Controlled Oscillator
100% analogue VCO with sub oscillator, providing sawtooth, triangle, square with PWM and noise. Each of the waveforms can be blended together to provide completely new complex wave shapes.
