Don't let the posting name fool you! My knowledge of drums is 'alright' at best! This review was kindly written by Austin Lane, Absolute Music's new drum manager!
2BOX DRUMIT 5 MK2 ELECTRONIC DRUM KIT
Having been playing drums for more years than I care to mention, and having just taken over the drum managers position at Absolute Music (after 19 years at one of the UKs leading Drum Stores), I came into contact with the 2Box Drumit Five kit for the first time, and straight away they even gave me a pair of sticks and asked me to put it through it's paces!!!!! Challenge accepted!
Now I have to be perfectly honest and say that I have always viewed electronic drums as a necessary evil; ideal for home use, and home recording, but not really stepping up to the mark against the 'real thing'... but the 2Box Drumit 5 has gone a long way into convincing me otherwise.
The first thing that strikes you (besides the bright Orange colour scheme), is the build quality of the rack/hardware. Unlike most electronic kits that i have come across the ball/socket/hex tom arm allows for optimum position of the pads, and all are of a good realistic size, including the bass drum! Each pad is dual trigger, and you can interchange with real drumheads or mesh heads, and the cymbals both in terms of sound and playabilty are by far the best I have come across in the world of electronics. The bell of the cymbals are particulary realistic.
Now to the brain of the beast! The sounds are very realistic and all 'play along' tracks use real instruments, which is indeed a welcome change. However, the best point is the ability to connect to a computer via USB, and all sounds and kits can be easily downloaded to the internal Flash memory. Use the editor to download complete kits or just drag-and-drop from the computer's file manager. Even for an old acoustic dinosaur like me, this was a doddle to use.
The use of a regular snare stand and a real hi-hat stand all combine to make this one of the best electronic kits that I have played. Having also talked to a couple of the experienced hi-tech guys here, they all said that as non-drummers, this is the kit that they would choose.
2BOX DRUMIT 5 MK2 ELECTRONIC DRUM KIT - SUMMARY
So to sum up, if you fancy a break from the standard run of the mill electronics, I would seriously suggest trying the 2Box Drumit 5 kit. As they say the future could well be Orange!!!!!
